A day with IntoUniversity

Last week, in collaboration with IntoUniversity, Nelson Bostock (NBU) and Fever welcomed 13 students aged 16 -18 to our office to talk about a career in PR . IntoUniversity is a charity that supports students from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds to achieve their educational ambitions. For many of the students they will be the first in their families to attend university. 

Our aim was to open up their minds to new possibilities when looking into future careers and to encourage diversity and inclusion in the PR industry. While many of the students very honestly expressed that they had no idea what PR was, they soon found that they understood the variety of skills which go into the role. In our thought-provoking debate session, they quickly showed their intuitive knowledge on what makes a good news story and what may cause a problem for a brand’s reputation.

We were also joined by Sam Roberts, who heads up the EMEA Communications for the music brand, Fender, a Fever client. He talked us through his journey into the Music and Entertainment industry, providing a great example of how  a passion in a particular field can help you find a career working with what you love most.

The second half of the day really allowed the students to think creatively about their own potential campaigns, and what they would do if they worked in a PR agency. With support from both NBU and Fever staff, we grouped them into teams to compete against one another and demonstrate what they had learnt throughout the day. It definitely brought some competitive streaks, and we were completely blown away by the ideas and strategies they came up with. 

Working with these creative young minds provided a reminder of how diversity and inclusion is so important if we are to harness the creativity and ideas that power successful agencies.

We want to give a special thanks to everyone who helped make the day possible at NBU/Fever. We were thrilled to be able to run this successful and exciting workshop, and hopefully inspire a new generation of talented PR professionals. This is just one of the many initiatives we are undertaking as part of the Unlimited Group’s commitment to a more diverse workplace.
